Submission

Linked here is the PDF submitted to my tutor for the first part of Assignment 1.

It starts with some introductory text specifically for the tutor before going into the proposed Portfolio PDF itself.

Self evaluation

The course handbook lists the assessment criteria, some of which are a little more difficult to apply to SYP than others, but I will attempt to address each the areas:

  • Demonstration of technical and visual skills (materials, techniques, observational skills, visual awareness, design and compositional skills)
    • From the point of view of producing a visually appealing and informative PDF that communicates my intent and photographic output – I am happy that I did this successfully
  • Quality of outcome (content, application of knowledge, presentation of work in a coherent manner, discernment, conceptualisation of thoughts, communication of ideas)
    • To me this kind of overlaps with the previous criteria category, as one of the major objectives of this assignment is the “presentation of work in a coherent manner”, which I believe I have achieved
    • “conceptualisation of thoughts, communication of ideas” in this context means the contextualisation text – the intro and the artist’s statement; I am mostly satisfied with these as a snapshot of my current thinking, but also recognise that I will most likely continue tweaking the text during SYP
  • Demonstration of creativity (imagination, experimentation, invention, development of a personal voice)
    • I’m not persuaded that experimentation is advised at this stage; in fact the assignment brief specifically refers to confirming what format the recipients want the work, and adhering to their organisational norms
  • Context (reflection, research, critical thinking)
    • I have done a lot of researching of other artists and how they present themselves on their websites and where available, their portfolio documents (not many artists host these on their websites but a handful of helpful ones do)
